Decisions, decisions, decisions.

The only thing that has really been on my mind since I got accepted to AUR (YAY!!!) is where to go to school. I've narrowed it down ( I think) to AUR and BYU - but they are pretty much opposites, and I'm torn.

BYU

Price= A lot cheaper than Rome :)

Student body= 30,000+

Location=Smallish college town in Happy Valley

Proximity= Hour and a half drive from home, less if the familia moves like they are thinking about.

Campus size= Very large

Scholarship= One year tuition

Religious Affilliation=LDS

AUR

Price=Expensive + Plane ride

Student Body=500-600 students a semester

Location=Rome, one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the world!

Proximity= A really long flight ( random google search gave me about 18-24 hrs including layover) away from home.

Campus Size=Very small

Scholarship=I don't know yet

Religous Affilliation=None, but Rome is a very Catholic city.

So I really do want to go to Rome - but it's so expensive and it would be really scary! I don't know what I'm going to do. I might go to AUR for a year and then transfer back to BYU or another U.S. college. I want to major in Art History, later go on to get my Ph.D, and later then that work in a museum. My stepdad told me to contact some college level Art History profs, I emailed about 6 or 7 and heard back from three - one voted for Rome, one for BYU, and another told me neither, so it didn't really help that much, lol. What do you think? Where should I go to college? (Lori, you are probably the only one that will read this - so I should just say Lori, where should I go to college? hahahaha)

Okay, sister.... you know where I want you to go. :) But, here's my argument as to why... I think you will get an education in Art History that you can't get anywhere else (Europe? Rome? Come on! "lets go walk down to this sculpture so you can understand what I'm talking about."). Yes, it would be scary. Yes, it will test your faith. Yes, it's thousands of miles away from home... but Rome? You ultimately have to decide if that's something you're ready for. It WOULD look amazing on a resume AND help you learn Italian pretty dang fast. Plus, Van and I are totally there! ;)

BYU is awesome. I wouldn't mind having you go there just cause then I could still visit you often. However, we're moving away anyway... so.. :)

I honestly will support you in whatever decision you make. I know it sounds like I'm 100% for Rome and will be upset if you don't go, but I honestly am just wanting YOU to make the best decision for YOU. I know Rome is a lot of money and that's a big concern of yours. But, I don't want that to overshadow what an amazing opportunity it is. What did the professors say? What were their pros and cons?

I'm going to send this to Amanda and Alli and have them give you their two cents worth too.... tee hee.

I know it's a big decision. I'll keep you in my prayers, lil sis.

So Em, here is my contribution to this discussion, from one shy gal to another. Do you recall that line in Hairspray when the girl sings "but now I feel like Gidget and I gotta get to Rome"? Well, my friend, I think you should do just that. Like Lori said, you will be getting hands on education unlike any you could get at BYU. You wanna see the David? Ok, hop on a train and go to Florence!

Being the shy person that I am, I would also worry about living in a foreign country for at least a year. On the other hand, what a great opportunity to learn about yourself in a new place where no one knows you. You could pretend NOT to be shy...ya know, the whole fake it 'till you make it scheme. That really works for some people! Now, I'm not saying that you shouldn't remain your awesome, shy, self, simply suggesting the potential of moving to a brand new place. I personally think that you can make a successful go of it. If you get home-sick for family, we both know that Van and Lori will come visit you in a heartbeat. Heck, I might even tag along too. :)

I happen to know that there is more than one LDS branch in Rome, so you won't be completely alone in that area.

If you want to get married soon, I would say go to BYU. If not, go to ROME!!

That's all. I hope it helps you a bit. :) If you have any questions for me, you know how to get in touch.

Em, I would have to echo what Lor and Alli have said. There are pros and cons to both situations. I think that you couldn't get a more hands on education for art history than in Rome. Really in the end this decision needs to be between you and the Lord. If He needs you in Rome, go to Rome. If He needs you here, stay here. If it's one of those "you make the choice" answers, go to Rome! ;)

Em, one more thing. I agree that you should definitely pray about your decision. The Lord knows you best, right? I get all excited about the thought of you going to school in Italy, but I really feel that it is important to do what the Lord directs you to do. I'm with Amanda, though. If he says "you decide," then I would say "Ciao" and head off to Europa!
